Understanding Types of Air Conditioning Systems

Discussions about heating and cooling systems often include references to “split systems” and “packaged systems.” It is important for a homeowner that is considering a new heating and/or air conditioning system to choose the most cost-effective option.

Split Systems

Nationwide, most homeowners have split systems in their residences. There are three components in a split-system central air conditioner:

  • A compressor and condenser housed in an outdoor metal cabinet
  • An evaporator coil housed in an indoor cabinet
  • An air handler that sends the cooled air through the ductwork. Usually, this component is part of the heat pump or furnace.

A split-system CAC is often the most cost-effective option in homes that have furnaces but no central air.

Packaged Systems

In a packaged central air conditioning unit, the evaporator coil, compressor and condenser are all in one cabinet, located either on a concrete slab near an exterior wall or on the roof.

Ductwork passes through the roof or an exterior wall to supply conditioned air to the living area. Since the unit includes either a natural gas furnace or electric heating coils, there is no need for a separate indoor furnace.
